Right from day one , India has been in news in London Olympics 2012 and yes not for chances of winning medals but for a ‘mystery woman’ from India walking ahead of athletes in the parade during the inauguration ceremony, as if she were an official representative.Madhura Nagendra-the mystery woman, selected for some formal inaugural Indian Dance gave India a controversial start and a reason to be highlighted in news . In a week’s time , between expected disastrous performances in different sports from the athletes , came two controversial decisions against Indian Boxers , Sangwan and Krishan -Reasons to raise voice against and crib about ! Indeed! These decisions ,so vague, do matter but what about the losses in archery, shooting, hockey, tennis and badminton ? The fact remains that where China and the USA are competing with 42 and 43 medals on number 1 and 2 , India(world’s 2nd largest population) stands on number 35 with only 2 medals and neither of the two is gold ! Excluding these controversial decisions, where does India stand ?Are the players to be blamed or the national administration taking care of sports department ? Are we responsible for not taking any sport more serious than Cricket ?The fact is – It is the athletes who need to perform exceptional to lift the morale of the government, the intention of the sponsors and the confidence of the nation! It was because of exceptional performance of Indian Hockey Team and players like Dhyan Chand that India considered hockey as its national game after independence. Today, boxing is considered an important sport just because of boxers like Vijender Singh Beniwal or Mary Kom have done exceptionally well to make the government and the nation divert brains towards the sport and the opportunities! If today Cricket is considered a religion Team India God’s , it is because the players gave us a reason to be proud winning World Cup twice and numerous other trophies ! Cribbing about few decisions going against Indian athletes cannot hide the fact they are not competent enough and that is the most primary fact !
As per the data of household expenditure prepared by NSSO , poverty level in the country has come down to 26 percent from 29.8 percent in 2009-10.Planning Commission’s chairman , Montek Singh Ahluwalia said poverty level has come down drastically compared to what it was in 2000 !
Statistical data can show India as a poverty-free country in the coming years, big deal? But the ground level reality is far behind those mathematical calculations !
Its the 9th day today , when key Team Anna members, Manish Sisodia,Gopal Rai and Arvind Kejriwal (who is also diabetic) have not eaten anything, demanding the government for an independent probe against 14 cabinet ministers! The government seems to be following the strategy of ‘Deaf Ears’ this time, with none from the government even bothering about the fast at Jantar Mantar, in the nation’s capital ! Doctors have been advising the 400 people on fast(including the Team Anna key members) to get hospitalized and Kejriwal being a diabetic, needs a mandatory hospitalization! However, the team has so far declined any medical assistance ! Delhi Police has been reminding the team of their written agreement to get hospitalized in case of emergency and to make sure there is no compromise in law and order due to the Fast held by the Team ! Interestingly, the unofficial speakers of UPA – Mr Digvijay Singh or Mr Salman Khurshid have not been heard making speeches against the Team Anna, anymore! Seems the government is firm this time and not willing to give any importance to the protest ! It would be interesting to see who would give up first, Team Anna or the UPA government! Most importantly, the opposition parties have preferred keeping out this time , probably, after Anna has declared the formation of a new political party , if need be, for 2014 General Elections ! There may be a second reason to it – Political Leaders are counted in numbers who can support Anti-Corruption Movement 😀 ! Rather they be shut to avoid trouble on self ! No one can deny , neither the Congress or BJP , the two major national level parties, have done anything up to the expectations of their supporters(whenever they have held power) and 2014 elections will surely remind them of changing Indian mentality !
Salman Khurshid, The Union Law Minister , counter-attacked Team Anna to go to The United Nations seeking justice, if they did not believe in decisions of Supreme Court. He blamed Team Anna of raising issues which have been disapproved by the Supreme Court !
No matter how aggressive the campaigns of Team Anna are, the government has surely been able to detach the interest of commoners from Anna’s movements, slowly and steadily. The constant delays and counter-verbal attacks from government representatives like Salman Khurshid and Digvijay Singh, questioning authenticity of Team Anna and its movements, has left commoners in dilemma ! The parliamentarians (be it in the government or sitting as oppositions) got together (at least in this matter) and launched verbal counter-attacks(and some preferred keeping their mouth shut) on Team Anna and calmed down the ‘aggression’ of what could have been a ‘movement of reforms’ in Modern India ! The successfully spread the seeds of mistrust for Team Anna and their movements in the brains of commoners , through the same Media which had highlighted Anna as the next ‘Gandhi’ !
Whose efforts should we appreciate – the parliamentarians or Anna and his Team or the media(which made money airing Anna Hazare,a hero, initially and then questioning on the authenticity of the movement and people attached to it) ?
Such is the scarcity of drinkable water ? About half of Yamuna River is dead and contaminated badly ? Ground Water is getting exhausted and contaminated by factories to save expenses ? Governments, as usual, are busy saving or procuring seats on state and centre level and we are, as usual, habituated of not thinking beyond problems of or own lives. Factory and sewage wastes are getting dumped in the same river (without being properly processed) which we consider holy and we are speechless about it because we ourselves are the participant of the crime in someway or the other, busy blaming our governments. The level of risk and scarcity of pure water is slowly rising and before we realize , may be , in another decade or two, we may pay equal price for petrol and water, as rightly pointed out By Aamir Khan on Satyamev Jayate’s 12th show. It was about drinkable water – the scarcity of it in our country, the wastage and destruction of pure water resources and also about harvesting rain water ! This was, as usual, another very informative and educating episode, like all other previous episodes of Satyamev Jayate !
Hats Off to Aamir Khan for initiating talks about real concerns of our society beyond our individual and family issues which matter so much !
