ACP Vasant Dhoble’s war against Mumbai landmark restaurants and pubs?

Assistant Commissioner Of Police, who heads Mumbai’s Social Service branch has been facing criticisms from many citizens for what they term as ‘Taliban-ising’ Mumbai. Mumbai’s pubs, bars and restaurants  have been allegedly targeted by the ACP and his men and has terribly terrorized the nightlife of the city with suddenly imposed age-old laws, as claimed by some known people of the city.

His raids on city’s known restaurants and bars with hockey stick and cameras ,in the recent few days, have raised eyebrows amongst many who consider this unnecessary. To add on, a week before, two women sued the police for defamation because they were arrested for being prostitutes in a raid which was led by Mr Dhoble !

Well, if one thinks Mr Dhoble is just doing his job, then he should know that ACP Dhoble’s  track record has not been heroic. ACP Dhoble is claimed to be enjoying political patronage. He was suspended in 1989 for accepting a bribe in Pune. In 1994, he was sentenced to seven years in prison and fined a lakh for his role in a custodial death. He was dismissed from the force but reinstated in 1996, after his jail sentence was dismissed by the Mumbai High Court. Departmental probe on the matter is still on as per directions of Supreme Court!
